Like most Melbourne Cups, there are plenty of chances in this year’s race, & plenty of storylines. This is one of the most open fields we have seen for years with the favourites paying around $8.

Sir Dragonet is coming off a full of running Cox Plate & may well start the Cup favourite
Verry Elleegant is looking to win the elusive Caulfield Cup/Melbourne Cup double. Will 3200m prove too far for her?
Ashrun, with his win in the Hotham on Saturday, gets a start. It has Group 1 form in Germany and should be right in it as they cross the line.
Among the other leading chances is Finche. With his previous experience in the race, he has been set to peak for this race and recent form would indicate his lead up has been perfect – look for a bold showing.

The great Bart Cummings, the legendary Melbourne Cup winning trainer, always had horses in the Cup who had plenty of “metres in their legs”, having a number of lead up races. If this theory is to hold up, Vow & Declare, Twilight Payment, Dashing Willoughby, Miami Bound and Persan have all completed this form of preparation, and could be ones to watch at good odds.
